Moving Towards an Arms Trade Treaty

This public lecture is now available as: MP3 (please listen to the file below in four parts)

From 11-14 July 2011, the international community met in New York to discuss how to regulate the global arms market to prevent weapons reaching the hands of criminals, insurgents, human rights abusers and those violating international humanitarian law. The ultimate aim is to have in place by 2012 a strong arms trade treaty to control the international trade of conventional firearms.

This event will be in the form of a panel with three speakers discussing the following aspects of the treaty:

Chair
Matthew Zagor, Red Cross International Humanitarian Law Committee in the ACT

The problem
Dr Stephanie Koorey, Adjunct Research Associate at Monash University

The solution
Jesse Clarke, Legal Adviser, UK Foreign & Commonwealth Office (currently with the Office of International Law, Attorney-General’s Department)

The process
Netta Goussac, Office of International Law at the Attorney-General’s Department

A review
Kelisiana Thynne, Legal Advisor, International Committee of the Red Cross
